Production Project- Session 2

SUMMARY

Role: Editor

Intention (SMART Goal)

Specific: I will practice and learn how to effectively use more editing techniques, such as filters and editing to a rhythm.

Measurable: This is measurable through observation of the final product. Observable rhythm and filters show the development of these skills.

Achievable: I possess the basic technique necessary for building these skills, and can easily navigate WeVideo.

Relevant: Both filters and rhythm are tools that are essential to good editing. These will be useful for this project and many more to come.

Time-bound: The deadline is the end of the current session, in about two weeks. This is realistic because it is the same length of time I had in the previous project.

POST-PRODUCTION – REFLECTION

21st Century Skills

Ways of Thinking (Creativity, Innovation, Critical Thinking, Problem Solving)

When we were missing group members, I executed tasks that were not part of my established workload, including manipulating the environment during filming and finding music for the film.

I decided to use filters to show the change in tone in the film, despite it not being part of this session’s goals.

Ways of Working (Communication & Collaboration)

I worked with the editor and cinematographer to decide what we should film for it to work optimally with all of our roles. This led to us having takes padded with extra time before and after the main content so i had more to work with in post production. This gave me much more freedom in editing.

Tools for Working (Info & Media Literacy)

I watched tutorials on editing to learn more about different kinds of cuts and filters. I also watched the movie Baby Driver and many analyses and breakdowns of the editing within the film, as that was the kind of very intentional editing I wished to emulate.

Ways of Living in the World (Life & Career)

This will likely not factor into my career choice, but I intend to continue producing stop motion videos as a hobby. Already making films has taught me how to improve my stop motions, and the skills I learned this time concerning rhythm will really improve my future videos.

Reactions to the Final Version

A review I received from Josie commented on the intentional cuts set to the music, and how a lot of the actions in the film happened to the beat, such as a moment of darkness from the lights dimming.

This was helpful feedback because I really focused on lining up as much of the cuts and action within the film with the music used, to draw the viewer into the scene. This comment told me that I had succeeded in my goal.

Self-Evaluation of Final Version

The film is simple and straight forward. Someone is drawing, goes to sleep, wake up, and is then killed by their art.

The film is unexpected. It is not common for art to come to life and become murderous.

The film is emotional. The soundtrack adds suspense so the viewer can feel what the protagonist is feeling.

The film is a story. There is a clear beginning, middle, and end. The beginning is where the setting and character is established, the middle is when the protagonist falls asleep, and the end is when the protagonist is killed.

What I Learned and Problems I Solved

This session I learned how to add filters and adjust audio levels, as well as edit to a rhythm. These concepts will allow me to express myself more clearly and communicate my intentions better in the future.

learning to edit to a rhythm really changed my whole perspective on editing. Previously I had somewhat haphazardly slapped the shots together, only making sure we had the necessary content. I had no idea all of the purposeful skills that go into editing that don’t even register with the viewer. This will greatly improve my future works.

A problem that I solved is the shots I was given not telling a clear story, and having no obvious transition between them. To fix this I changed the shot order we had originally decided on, which created a more smooth and cohesive storyline.
